The dumbfounded old man couldn’t believe what he saw. He clearly had told the boy what he was going to face, yet the boy still chose the hardest one. If he wasn’t an idiot what was he? That was going to be nine ranks worth of opponents he was going to challenge. Wu Ji was only at the Mortal Realm’s 5th Rank, so nine more layers would be a 4th Rank Martial Apprentice. Even a Saint like him with thousands and thousands of years of life didn’t know anyone who could confidently fight those nine ranks above them.

The old man suddenly thought of something—indeed, jumping that many ranks was impossible, but if it did happen…

The old man wasn’t wrong—Wu Ji’s idea was indeed to fight the first puppet then Swallow them to break through to the next realm. He was confident in defeating the first few puppets with a simple kick or two, but if he didn’t break through or get strong enough, then he’d just die.

It’s not that Wu Ji was resigned to death, he was just punishing himself for complacency—if he couldn't pass the first hard test he met, what would he amount to in the future? Would he just be a nobody, some other cultivator who was just the same as everyone else? Would someone who had a Chaotic Body, the powers of the Swallow God, and a heaven-defying system be unable to pass such a simple test?

The cautious Wu Ji would have chosen room number five, but like Tang Yan, he’d decided to face danger. He was pushing himself to catch up to the others, to be strong. When Wu Ji thought back to how Tang Yan had looked so relaxed, he was ashamed that a gorgeous woman was so much more capable than him. It wasn’t that he looked down on women, he just wanted to be a capable man woman could look up to—after all, few women could respect a man who was weaker than them.

Wu Ji’s way of thinking was neither right nor wrong. It was true that in this world many women loved stronger men but that didn’t mean that there weren’t women that didn’t mind if their man was weaker or not. It was just a choice they had to make—better cultivation meant that one would live longer—it was more assuring to love someone who would live as long as you. Likewise, it was harder to love someone who would die long before you would.

The ways of the world put women especially in danger—some men looked to them as playthings and didn’t understand the greatness of a woman’s love. Thus, women, especially the beautiful ones, would always be in danger unless they had the strength to fend for themselves. For some, the only solution was to find a kind, strong man as a partner. Someone who was strong, or had a strong background. The other choice was to enter a sect, but even within sects, they wouldn’t be completely safe.
